Thoughtful Thursday – Discord

By 10 November 2022January 17th, 2023No Comments

Today is the launch of our new Safeguarding initiative – Thoughful Thursday. Every Thursday we will alert you to some parental information that may help you to keep your child safe online at home. We will be keeping ourselves up to date on all new platforms or games that are coming out that our children may want to access. The information will help you understand any concerns these may have for your children. Please can you also let us know if there are any platforms, sites or games that your child has accessed that concerned you that you would like us to share with other parents.

Discord is a free app which allows users to communicate in real time via text, video or voice chat. Available on desktop and mobile devices, it was originally designed to help gamers cooperate ā€“ but has evolved into a more general networking platform for a range of online communities, discussing topics like TV series, music, Web3 and more. Discord is organised around closed groups, referred to as ā€˜serversā€™. To join a server, users must be invited or provided with a unique link. Itā€™s a space for users to interact with friends, meet others with shared interests and collaborate in private online ā€” but itā€™s also a place where young people can be exposed to risks if the right precautions arenā€™t taken.

In the guide, you’ll find tips on a number of potential risks such as cyberbullying, predators and inappropriate content.
